Before you actually build your website, you first need to decide what niche you want to write about. If you don’t know what you want to write about, you won’t write anything.
A niche is simply a small sector of the online marketplace. For example, if you were an avid golfer, and you like writing about it, then your niche is golfing and the audience you would write for is fellow golfers.
Of course, “golf” is not actually a niche. It’s more of a category under which you would drill further down to focus on some specific aspect of golfing. You might want to write about drivers, putters, golf balls or golf bags. You might even want to write about the pros and cons of your local golf courses.
Can’t decide what to write about? Make a list of your interests.
Simple enough, right? Well, you’d be surprised how many people stall at this very preliminary step. A common stumbling block is that since most people have a wide variety of interests, it becomes difficult to decide on which one to choose.
The trick is to write a list of the various topics that interest you, then narrow the list down based on two things:
- How much do you think you can write about that subject?
- How much of an audience is out there for that topic?
You need to be passionate about the subject you decide to write about. If you’re not, you’ll quickly burn out and lose interest. A quick way to get a feel for how much you can write about a given niche is to try to come up with 10 topic headlines. If you can easily take a few minutes and crank out 10 headlines, you have a niche that you won’t get bored with too quickly down the line.
But if you can write reams of interesting stories about making sculptures out of your toenail clippings, you may not find much of an audience. There may be an audience out there, but it probably won’t be large enough to make a website devoted to that topic profitable.
My next article will be about how to figure out if there’s a large enough audience out there and how much competition there is in generating content for that niche.
